Inventory before the first box is sealed
Selling decisions are easier while model labels, chargers and accessories are still accessible. Walk through one room at a time and mark each item: keep, sell, donate, repair or recycle. Add a deadline so unsold items do not become moving-day problems.
Take photographs before furniture blocks the light or boxes cover the collection route. For bulky equipment, show where it stands and how it must leave the property.
Living room and entertainment area
Start with electronics that have clear model information and complete accessories. Televisions need remotes, feet and access notes. Speakers need power supplies and connection details. Consoles need controllers, cables and account removal.
- Televisions, stands and remotes
- Speakers and power supplies
- Games and consoles with tested controllers
- Projectors with remote, lens and usage details
- VR headsets after account removal
Keep boxes and fitted inserts if they remain sound. A fragile screen or lens is easier to move when the original protection is available.
Home office and study
Back up and reset devices before the moving week becomes frantic. Record the model and specification while the computer is still connected. Match each charger to the right device and label loose cables.
- Laptops with chargers
- Desktop computers with component details
- Printers with ink or toner status disclosed
- Alexa devices removed from your account
- iPods with generation, storage and cable
Do not pack a computer before checking the backup. The laptop data guide covers trusted devices, account removal and reset.
Bedrooms and wardrobes
Small personal electronics are easy to lose among clothing and bedside drawers. Find smartwatch chargers, spare straps, headphones and cases. Remove account locks before the original phone or tablet is packed separately.
- Smartwatches with straps and charger
- Yoga mats with condition and cleanliness notes
- Mattresses only where condition and buyer requirements allow
Use current photographs. A mat, mattress or wearable can change condition through storage and handling, so an old image may not represent the item at collection.
Kitchen and utility room
Large appliances need enough time for testing, cleaning, defrosting or safe disconnection. Do not leave them until the evening before the move. Confirm who is responsible for plumbing, gas or electrical work.
- Ovens with fuel type, dimensions and shelves
- Washing machines with disconnection agreed
- Refrigerators with time to defrost and dry
- Dehumidifiers with tank and drainage accessories
- Air purifiers with filter information
- Portable air conditioners with hose and window kit
Photograph model labels before an appliance is pulled away from the wall. The label may become harder to reach once the collection route is crowded with boxes.
Garage, shed and garden
Outdoor and hobby items often have several loose parts spread across shelves. Inventory them before the storage area is cleared. Remove fuel or batteries only according to safe instructions.
- Grills with grates, controls and rust shown
- Plants with current size, pot and health photographs
- Drones with controller, batteries and charger
- Skateboards with deck, trucks and wheels checked
- Snowboards with base, edges and bindings photographed
A plant collection or bulky grill may need a different vehicle from the rest of the house move. Agree whether the item leaves before, during or after the main moving day.
Home gym and spare room
Fitness equipment can be deceptively heavy. Measure the assembled item and the exit route. Photograph stairs, tight turns and a lift. Do not dismantle a machine until the buyer or collector has agreed the method.
- Treadmills and exercise machines
- Barbells with every plate and collar inventoried
- Punching bags with base or hanging hardware
- Dumbbells listed by individual weight
The bulky fitness guide has an access checklist that also works for many large household items.
Set a decision deadline
Give each item a realistic period for quotation, collection or another route. If a sale cannot be arranged by the deadline, move it to donation, repair or recycling rather than carrying an unwanted item to the next property by default.
Keep one small folder with model photographs, agreed prices, collection times and payment records. Moving days are noisy and distracting. A simple written record reduces confusion.
